آهنگ «Englishman in New York» «یک انگلیسی در نیویورک» از آلبوم «…Nothing Like the Sun» در سال 1988 توسط استینگ ساخته و اجرا شد. آلبوم در 1988 جایزه بهترین آلبوم بریتانیا را از آن خود کرد. منظور از «انگلیسی» در این آهنگ، «Quentin Crisp» نویسنده و قصه‌گوی مشهور انگلیسی است که در همان زمان، از لندن به نیویورک مهاجرت کرده بود.

آهنگ در 1988 منتشر شد اما در ابتدا چندان مورد استقبال قرار نگرفت و از رده 51 لیست تک آهنگ‌های برتر بریتانیا بالاتر نرفت. در 1990 و پس از کمی دستکاری و اجرای مجدد، دیوید فینچر، کارگردان معروف، برای این آهنگ ویدیویی ساخت که از خود استینگ، گروهش و کریسپ، نویسنده انگلیسی در آن استفاده شده بود.

پس از این ویدیو و مشهور شدن آهنگ، طی سال‌ها بسیاری از این ترانه و آهنگ به صورت کلی یا جزیی استفاده یا آن را بازخوانی کرده‌اند.

• گروه «بلک آید پیز» «Black Eyed Peas» در سال 2005 برای آلبوم «Monkey Business»  از اجرای استینگ به عنوان خواننده میهمان استفاده کرد.
• امید جلیلی Omid Djalili کمدین ایرانی – بریتانیایی در شو کمدی خود در شبکه یک بی بی سی، The Omid Djalili Show این آهنگ را برای آگهی و تیزر برنامه خود به کار برد. جلیلی اسم آهنگ را به «یک ایرانی در بریتانیا» تغییر داد و اشعاری با محتوای «فرهنگ ایرانی-انگلیسی» به آن افزود.
• هواداران باشگاه فوتیال آرسنال، برای طرفداری و حمایت از «تئو والکات» بازیکن انگلیسی خود، بخشی از ترانه را برای او، با تغییراتی می‌خواندند. این اتفاق هنگامی رخ داد که در بسیاری از بازی‌ها، والکات تنها فرد انگلیسی در ترکیب 11 نفره آغاز بازی بود.

مهدی مافی – رفقای قدیمی

من کلن موزیک کانتری را دوست دارم، هر چند که به نظر خیلی ها ممکن است چیپ باشد و بی کلاس (!!) اما حس خوبی دارم نسبت به این سبک. ریتم و انرژی که در موسیقی کانتری هست به نظرم در هیچ سبک دیگری به این حالت شاد و سرخوشانه وجود ندارد. قبلن در یک پست، یک نمونه از موسیقی خوب کانتری را گذاشته بودم. اما خودم یادم نمی آید که تا به حال نمونه ای از موزیک کانتری را که در ایران یا خارج، به فارسی ساخته شده باشد دیده باشم و شنیده باشم. یکی دوسال پیش این آهنگ را اولین بار از شبکه «ایران موزیک» شنیدم با یک کلیپ سردستی که انگار در حیاط خانه ای ساخته شده بود و با آنکه سعی شده بود که فضای سبک کانتری را داشته باشد، چندان کار موفقی نبود.

این بار آهنگ «رفقای قدیمی» یا «دوستان قدیمی» کار «مهدی مافی» با یک کلیپ شسته و رفته تر پخش شده است و به نظرم کار فوق العاده ایست. برخلاف خیلی از راک ها، رپ ها و هاردراک های ساخته شده در داخل ایران، متن خوبی دارد که برای ترانه ای با این مقیاس، می شود گفت عالیست. نوع سازبندی و تنظیم هم به نظرم خوب است و خوب هم اجرا کرده آهنگ را و ویدیو هم خوب است. در مجموع کار خوبیست. هم بسیار به ریشه های کانتری وفادار است و هم سرخوشی و شادمانی سبک را در آهنگ و متن و ویدیو نشان داده است. بشنوید و ببینید.
